The Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. promoted by the three major was public sector of companies originally planned in Nahar village (Indian oil corporation Ltd, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd) was originally planned in Nahar Village of Ratnagiri district

Ratnagiri Police have imposed sec/44  of the Cr .PC in Barsu and solgaon villages in Rajapur taluka of Ratnagiri district, ahead of a survey for The proposed petrochemical refinery project in the area. For the previous two years, locals have been opposed to the idea.

This project was originally planned in Nanar village of Ratnagiri district. The Shiv sena had earlier opposed the project, citing protest by local residents, after which Barsu-Solgaon area was finalised as the location. But locals and environmental groups have been opposing the refinery project in the Konkan area because they are worried about pollution and harm to the area, which is heavily dependent on agriculture and famous for cultivation of Alphonso mangoes.

 The police restarted the media entry into the plot for proposed refinery and detained locals who protested the entry of vehicles to the proposed site.

At least four anti-refinery activist were arraested and preventive notices were isued to 45 locals opposed to the project..

Government of India wants to set up a mega oil refinery project on the west coast of Maharshtra. In 2015, it was announced that the Ratnagiri  refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd project would be built in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. Earlier this project was to be built in Nanar Ratnagiri

The government claims that the refinery project will generate massive employment and develop the entire nation.
